How to Claim HVAC Tax Credits
Homeowners can take advantage of tax credits on HVAC units purchased and installed between 2023 and December 31st, 2025. These include both the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C) and, in some cases, the Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) – but they expire at the end of 2025, so you must act before December 31, 2025.Â
The credit you qualify for can very depending on the type of heating and cooling system. Follow the steps below to claim your HVAC tax credit when you file your federal income tax return.
Keep a copy of your installation records and your manufacturer's certification statement proving the efficiency of your system.
Download and complete IRS Form 5695. Fill out the relevant section(s) of the form depending on what you've upgraded or installed.
File these forms when you file your federal taxes.
